Should I stain or paint my fence?
Our recommendation on stain or painting a fence is typically to wait one year before applying the paint so the wood has time to breathe. We have seen instances where the wood has cracked due to early application of stain and/or paint. Most wood fences are stained and some are painted different colors. The most popular color to paint a fence is white.
Paint acts as a barrier against moisture, UV rays, and insects, which can extend the life of your fence. A well-applied paint job can prevent wood rot and warping.
Potential Issues: Traps Moisture: If the wood isn't properly dried or if the paint starts to crack and peel, moisture can get trapped inside. This can lead to rot, mold, and deterioration.
Peeling & Chipping: Over time, paint will peel, requiring sanding and repainting. If neglected, exposed wood can weaken. More Maintenance: Compared to stain, paint requires more upkeep to prevent moisture-related damage.
How to Avoid Problems: Use a high-quality exterior paint designed for wood. Prime the fence first to seal the wood properly. Ensure the wood is dry before painting to prevent trapping moisture. Regularly inspect for cracks or peeling and touch up as needed. If you prefer lower maintenance and better breathability, stain is a better choice.
